Latino community about career opportunities in the performing arts.

Director Jerry Mitchell about working on the Emilio and Gloria Estefan story to Broadway. “What was wonderful for me working on OYF!, I wasn’t Latino, so I had to make sure the story would resonate with people who don’t understand the Spanish language and that every family could enjoy the same experience,” says Mitchell. He shares how the Musical evolved from its Chicago debut to the Broadway stage and credits his team’s collective
participation toward the “best idea in the room” to continually improving the production.

In 2005 Maria Torres auditioned young dancers to take part in a Broadway style production number to be performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center for the Upfronts as part of the cartoon Class of 3000, based on Andre 3000 (Outkast)), and is blown away by a talented 10-year old—Marina Micallizi. Since then a mentor-mentee relationship has flourished, sparked by Maria’s passion to help Marina light up not only on the stage but also behind the scenes, leading Marina on her own journey to pay it forward by exposing others to the healing power of the arts. Marina believes that we each have the power to light the darkness and she hopes to create a better, brighter world.

Marina credits as a performer include on Disney’s film Enchanted, the Broadway musicals How the Grinch Stole Christmas the Musical and Billy Elliot, and other notable productions as well as assistant to top choreographers such as Brian Friedman, Mia Michaels, Dave Scott, Laurie Ann Gibson, Chris Judd and Shane Sparks.

On a winter walk around a frozen lake nearly two years ago, Maria Torres and Giovanna Aguilar wondered: “How can we pay it forward as artists and create content that matters to us?”

We invite our friends to tune in to our answer —HourGlass Time to Talk, a dynamic podcast that shares the artist’s journey with personal stories that define not just the work but also what have shaped the person’s humanity. From the stage to the silver screen to the recording to the writer’s keyboard, HourGlass celebrates the artist’s voice across all mediums. 

On the first segment of our episode #1, we introduce our show’s mission then follow up with the highly entertaining segment “Kick, Ball, Change—Keep it Moving with Maria Torres,” spotlighting the mishaps that happen when performing for a live audience and how these are aptly suited as metaphors for recovery after a misstep in real life. On the launch of this highly entertaining segment, Maria Torres talks with Sylvia Roldán Dohi who was a swing on Miss Saigon for 10 years on Broadway.

All the world’s a stage, and there is no better place where junior high school students can begin to prepare to take on the world than on their school’s theater stage. Honoring our mission to support the arts in all of its forms, especially through education, HG’s Giovanna Aguilar recently had an inspirational conversation with Gary Politano on the Mr. and Ms. Belleville Scholarship Contest, which was conducted this past April at the Belleville High School, Belleville, NJ.

Gary is joined Vice Principal Joseph Rotonda to share how this contest evolved from an idea that began at a library from Gary’s experience in working on beauty pageants such as Miss USA to providing scholarships to students for post their high school graduation.
